MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Save Ourselves Movement for Justice and Democracy said now is the time for Alabama to expand Medicaid.

The group held a rally on the capitol steps while standing six feet apart, demonstrating social distancing.

They’re calling on Gov. Kay Ivey and the legislature to expand Medicaid to people who may be affected by the coronavirus.

“I can’t think of a better use of emergency power than to take the first steps to implement Medicaid,” Former state Sen. Hank Sander said.

Republican lawmakers said Medicaid expansion is unlikely to happen anytime soon.
