ALABAMA (WDHN) — The governor’s office is reporting Alabama saw a steady unemployment rate for January 2023.

According to the Governors office, in January 2023, the state sat at a steady 2.6% unemployment, which is unchanged from December 2022’s revised number.

January’s rate represents 58,411 unemployed persons around the state.

Unemployment rates in each of the Wiregrass counties increased between December 2022 and January 2023:

  • Geneva County: January 2023 – 2.4%
    • December 2022- 1.8%
  • Henry County: January 2023- 2.8%
    • December 2022- 2.1%
  • Coffee County: January 2023- 2.7%
    • December 2022- 2%
  • Dale County: January 2023- 2.6%
    • December 2022- 2.3%
  • Houston County: January 2023- 2.8%
    • December 2022- 2.2%
  • Barbour County: January 2023- 4.6%
    • December 2022- 4%
  • Pike County: January 2023- 2.7%
    • December 2022- 2.3%
  • Covington County: January 2023- 2.8%
    • December 2022- 2.4%

Crenshaw County had the largest increase, going from 2.0% in December 2022, to 2.8% in January.

Th City of Dothan has a rate of 2.9%, a statistic that represents 31,355 unemployed persons. This is up significantly from December 2022’s rate of 2.3%.

Enterprise City has a rate of 2.6%, which represents 11,202 unemployed persons. This is also up from December’s rate of 2.1%.

According to the governors office, over the year, wage and salary employment increased by 54,100 persons, and multiple individual sectors have seen slight increases. The manufacturing sector has seen an increase of 10,400 workers, the professional and business services sector increased by 8,700 workers, and the private education and health services sector increased by 7,500 workers.

We have been enjoying a period of low unemployment, high wages and high jobs count for some time now, and I believe that more is yet to come. We will not back down on our commitment to continue to bring quality, high-paying jobs to Alabama.
