DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — The Houston Academy softball team returned home with their first state championship in the fastpitch area.

Wednesday night, the Raiders beat Mobile Christian 5-3 after scoring three of those runs coming in just the second inning.

Thursday morning, Raider Nation was pumped for the Lady Raiders’ victory in Birmingham.

Coach Sharon Cherry said with her team losing in the state championship last year, and battling through a lot of adversity and injuries, the state title takes on even more significance for the players, their families, and the coaches.

“We’re still a very young team we graduated one player we had a goal since day 1 we fell a little short last year and to achieve it feels surreal and like a dream,” Cherry said.

Coach Cherry described her team as gritty.

She believes her young squad will be just as hungry for a title repeat next year.
