BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WDHN) — Breaking COVID news coming from Alabama Department of Public Health State Health Officer Dr. Scott Harris.

During the COVID-19 briefing on Monday, Dr. Harris announced that Alabama saw 41 people die from COVID-19 on Monday alone, bringing the new total of deaths in the state to 16,496.

7,000 new COVID cases were also reported on Monday.

As of Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2.7 million Alabamians have received at least one dose of the vaccine, which brings Alabama’s vaccination ranking to 45th nationwide.

Two million people are fully vaccinated throughout the state.

Alabama hospitals are currently experiencing staffing issues due to medical workers testing positive for COVID-19 themselves.
