GENEVA, Ala. (WDHN) — Geneva City Schools Superintendent, Ronald Snell released an update on the districts mask policy.

Geneva High School Facebook posted the memo that the mask mandate will expire at the end of the school day on Friday, September 17. Which means Monday, September 20, faculty, staff and students will no longer be required to wear a mask at school.

The memo stated school officials will to continue to recommend to wear masks when inside, however it will not be a requirement.

Superintendent Snell says the decision to discontinue the mask policy is based on the reduced number of positive cases in the schools and the community.

Snell told WDHN News the district has maintained a .48% positivity rate over the past 10 days. So 10 days with less than 1.0% is a generally accepted threshold statewide for discontinuing mask mandates.

“If you’re going to let data drive going into a mandate,” Snell said. “You got to let data drive coming out of one as well and fortunately, we’re blessed the numbers not there to continue a mandate.”
