DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — A Dothan eye surgeon is donating $95 million to the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s medical school.

Dr. Marnix Heersink and his wife Mary Heersink have had four of their children attend UAB and felt very honored to be able to donate to the school that has served their family for many years.

Dr. Heersink is the Co-owner and Chairman at Eye Center South and he hopes that this donation will not only serve the students of UAB but also the Circle City.

“We are in the position to do this we feel so grateful to have the chance to enrich the lives of others particularly also and really important to me, Dothan,” Dr. Heersick said.

The Heersink donation will be used to establish global health and biomedical innovation institutes.

“The biggest impact we can think of with what my husband has been able to do to develop in business interest, is the next generation and of course that means education,” Mary Heersink said. “That’s the thrust of, I believe, what we’ll continue to focus on going forward.”
