Angel of Hope provides a place for families to grieve the loss of a child this Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Every year, thousands of families are devastated by the death of a baby. To help provide them emotional support, October 15th is designated in the U.S. as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day.

Families in the Wiregrass also commemorate their losses no matter how recent or how long ago they may have been.

The Angel of Hope statue in Dothan’s Westgate Park is a place they can go that is dedicated to remembering their children who have died.

“It’s just a place where we can come to share our grief,” grieving mother Gwendolyn Howell said. “We can come just sit in silence and quietness. It’s just a special place.”

Howell says she lost her baby boy around five hours after his birth on a military base in Germany back in 1978.

With no grave to visit, the Angel of Hope statue serves as a grieving place for her family along with many other families in the Wiregrass who have suffered the loss of their children, whether at some point during pregnancy or even much later in life.
