OZARK, Ala. (WDHN) — Ozark Police Officer Samuel Yoh was shot multiple times while responding to a suicide call last Thursday.

The 23-year-old gunman opened fire on Yoh before he started firing back, along with other officers who were arriving on the scene.

“It’s pretty shocking; I mean for this town, this tight knit community, when something like this happens, it’s awful,” Ozark resident Zach Johnson said. “Most everybody knows everybody. It’s just a bad, bad situation.”

Yoh is at Southeast Health in critical condition, but Ozark Mayor Bob Bunting said that Yoh is improving.

With the constant attack on law enforcement, some remind people that police are just like them.

“My thoughts go out to him,” Johnson said. “I know in this day and age, sometimes police officers get a bad rap, but you gotta remember they’re people too, just like us, and they’ve got families, and they try to do the best that they can to help people. So, we should try and do our part and try to help them as much as we can.”

People in the area are wishing for the best for Yoh.

“My prayers go out to his family and to him,” Wilberto Gonzalez said. “I hope that he does well and that God is blessing him and his family.”

The Wiregrass is showing its support for Yoh through a GoFundMe page.

The fundraiser is being organized by Ozark City Council member Brenda Simechak.

The fundraiser is meant to help with Yoh’s medical bills and bring aid to his family which will welcome a daughter in February.

Currently, the fundraiser has already raised $16,480 of its $20,000 goal.
