DALE COUNTY, Ala. (WDHN) — A suspect is in critical condition after police say they were shot by a homeowner after attempting to break in.
Just after 6 a.m. on Wednesday, Dale County deputies got a call from a homeowner that said someone was attempting to try to break into his home.
The father of the homeowner tells WDHN that the suspect tried to enter the home from the back fo the house.
When deputies arrived on the scene in the 5000 block of County Road 14, they say they saw a broken window where the suspect tried to break into the house.
The home is located in the Sylvan Grove community in Dale County.
During the attempted break-in, the homeowner shot one round from a firearm, hitting the suspect in the head, according to Dale County Chief Deputy Mason Bynum. The DCSO also says they found the suspect lying unresponsive near the home after being shot.
The suspect was then taken to a hospital where they are now in critical condition.
Deputies confirm that the homeowner and the suspect did not know each other.
Currently, the homeowner has not been charged for the incident.
Dale County Sheriff’s Office will be releasing more information as they are now at the beginning of the investigation.
