DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — A Dothan man has been arrested on animal cruelty charges after police say he killed three kittens.

On Sunday, Dothan Police responded to the 400 Block of Westgate Parkway to an animal cruelty complaint.

After they arrived, officers say they found a trash can filled with water, and inside was a separate container that had three kittens inside.

An investigation into the incident showed that the three kittens were only one day old at the time they were intentionally put into the water, according to police. Police state that the owner put the kittens in the water in an attempt to euthanize them because he did not want them.

Jack Richard Chafin, 67, of Dothan, was arrested and charged with three counts of aggravated cruelty to animals.

Chafin was released from the Houston County Jail on a $15,000 bond on Sunday.

Dothan Police ask that anyone who decides they no longer want their pet or may be struggling to provide care for their pet to seek assistance. Dothan residents can contact Dothan Animal Services at 334-615-4620, or after hours at 334-615-3000.
