HOUSTON COUNTY, Ala. (WDHN) — JR Fireworks, located on 231 South, is open all year round, but the fourth of July marks the busiest time of the year.

“We have a lot of travelers coming through heading to the beach with their family they stop in a lot of them have been coming in for years, their parents brought them in so its kind of like nostalgia,” Owner Stephanie Poppell said.

With the store less than a minute from the state line, most of its customers come from Florida.

A huge reason for that is because, in Florida, the kind of fireworks is limited.

“You can buy novelties, sparklers, but we have larger items for finales like 500-gram cakes, 200-gram cakes we have a lot of assortments,” Poppell said.

Austin Holley, who lives in Chipley, drove 20 minutes to jr’s to buy fireworks — spending nearly 400 dollars on two boxes.

People from Florida like to blow stuff up. Fireworks have definitely gone up but it is what is everybody gonna spend money to have fun you know how it goes,” Holley said.

The store is open 7 days a week. Poppell said they offer a variety of things like sparklers for weddings and gender reveals, they can even put on a show for you.
