DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — For three members of the Dothan City Schools Board of Education who decided not to seek re-election back in August, today was their last day to serve on the board.
Mike Schmitz, Susan Vierkandt, and Chris Maddox reflect on their time serving at Dothan City Schools.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed this service,” District 6 Representative, Chris Maddox said. “Public service is definitely a different animal. There are highs and lows, fortunately, the high notes outweighed the low notes.”
“I’ve enjoyed the challenge and I’ve enjoyed the people and the team,” District Three Representative, Susan Vierkandt said.
“We still have a long ways to go,” Charmain Of The Board of Dothan City Schools, Mike Schmitz said. “We have a lot of great things going on and I think the future is bright.”
With more than 25 years of combined experience at DCS alone. Each of them said it is time to move on and figure out what is in the next chapter of their life.
“I have been on the board for 7 years,” said Vierkandt, “We have done a lot and accomplished a lot. But I do believe it is always good to have fresh input, fresh blood.”
“Leadership there is a time limit and that time is coming on,” said Schmitz. “We have good leadership coming on board and I am looking forward to that.”
So now, what are they going to do with the rest of their time?
“I own a business so I will be plenty with that,” said Vierkandt.
“Whatever comes along I am looking to get involved with the community and we will see where it goes from here,” said Maddox.
“I’ve been in business here for 30 years,” said Schmitz. “Will continue with that and continue with my community involvement. I am excited.”
The first meeting under the new board will be Monday, October 11 at 5:30.
