DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Now we take a look at a new wiregrass football team: the first of its kind in the Wiregrass has made its way to Dothan.

The Alabama High School Athletic Association approved girls flag football as a sanctioned sport statewide.

Dothan city schools just recently handed out the jerseys to the members of the female flag football team.

They will have eleven games this season, the first being in Eufaula, with other games against Smith Station and Auburn to name a few.

The head coach, and students, are looking forward to getting onto the field.

“There are some leagues in the city and I encourage any and all girls especially to get out and play,” Head Coach Haley Williams said. “It is historic, these girls get to be part of something big. They get to be the first ones to write the chapter so I know they are excited.”

The wolves will play eleven games this season, the first in Eufaula on Tuesday against Russell County and Eufaula.
