DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Over the last week, Dothan has seen a string of shootings in various parts of the city.
The first shooting happened last Tuesday night at Tanglewood Apartments on the south side of town. Friday night, after the shooting dispute at the Wiregrass Commons Mall, five hours later another shooting occurred on West Monroe Street in northeast Dothan.
And the same weekend, a little less than 48 hours, a shooting took place Sunday night on Kristie road in northwest Dothan.
Two of the shootings were ruled fatal and the victims were under the age of 25.
“It’s very disturbing and it’s also tragic no matter if it’s one or three or four it’s one too many,” Mayor Saliba said.
Last week, Mayor Saliba and the city posted an online survey to find out what issues are important and gun violence made the list. Mayor Saliba said the first step is for the community to invest in the youth.
“I would like to listen and have some listening sessions and spend some time with just our youth,” He said. “I think it’s important for them to express what’s on their hearts and what’s on their minds about where we are and where they are and their thoughts on how they could use some help with dealing with it because I don’t think it’s a majority of our youth.”
Mayor Saliba said the city has plans in place in the near future that will help alleviate or reduce crime, but in the meantime, he encourages legal guardians to talk with their children and the youth to listen.
“I think if our youth will just reach out to those a little bit older than them and been through life experiences and to see what the choices are because it is a choice,” Saliba said.
Mayor Saliba wants to send his condolences to the victims’ families because it’s difficult to fathom when you find out your child’s life was taken away due to gun violence.
