DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — The Dothan Police Department is warning residents not to fall for a phone scam involving money cards.
Police say a Dothan resident reported getting a phone call from someone claiming to be from the Dothan Police Department.
The caller spoofed (masked/disguised their real number) to show it was coming from DPD’s main telephone line, 334-615-3000.
According to Dothan PD, the scammer told the person they had warrants with police, and to keep from going to jail, they needed to buy a pre-paid credit or gift card for a specific amount of money and give the card number to the caller.
The Dothan Police Department says they won’t call someone to collect money for a warrant. They will come in-person to a resident’s address for warrant-related issues.
