DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — A Dothan elementary school will receive financial support from the state.
Jerry Lee Faine is one of the 15 schools to make the Turnaround Schools Initiative list championed by Gov. Ivey.
The state is investing $15 million dollars into schools that have low math and reading scores, a high poverty rate, and many other factors.
The school has been working alongside with the state about their overwhelming needs that need to be addressed.
Dothan City Schools Assistant Superintendent Maria Johnson said one of the elementary school’s needs is teachers.
“These additional teachers will help bring the number of children we are working with down to a manageable number and they will get more attention that way to help address their needs they all have different gaps,” Johnson said.
Johnson said another big push will be parental engagement which plays a pivotal role in your child’s education as well as attendance which has been an issue.
Although its not a list to be proud of, she said they are happy to partner with the state in efforts to improve education.
