DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Huntsville, Decatur, and the Daphne Metropolitan area have all been listed as top-performing cities including one right here at home, Dothan.

According to Milken’s Institute report, in 2020, Dothan ranked 138th on the list and now a year later the circle city is ranked 60th — marking a 78 point increase.

“It’s great news for us here in Dothan and small cities like us but I think it’s part of a national trend a lot of things took place and happened you know with the pandemic and with the rioting and things taking place,” Mayor Saliba said.

Mayor Saliba also pointed out that Dothan is close to the beach which can be a driving force in attracting more residents. Dothan experienced the 6th biggest gain on the small cities list due to a recent one-year economic surge in jobs, wages, and gross domestic product.

The mayor says it’s been a hard year economically but the city has weathered the storm.

“The amount of people that has been coming here and also a test to the sales tax revenue that we have seen that have come in and just new families that are started here,” Mayor Saliba said.

“We remain the hub of a much much larger area than people understand realize and we’ve become that place to go whether its to shop to eat,” Visit Dothan CEO Aaron McCreight said.

The city will see a huge boost financially thanks to the busy weekend featuring circle city BMX. The event is expected to bring in tons of dollars.

“We’re talking almost 50,000 room nights for sports alone in the year here and millions and millions of dollars this weekend alone with people here spending and leaving their dollars right here in Dothan,” McCreight said.
