EARLY COUNTY, Ga. (WDHN) — A construction contractor is scheduled to close a portion of First Kolomoki Road beginning Monday as construction gets underway to replace a nearly 60-year-old bridge north of Blakely.
The Georgia Department of Transportation has allowed the contractor to close the road for approximately four months for the Little Kolomoki Creek bridge project. That bridge is about five miles north of Blakely and about seven miles south of Kolomoki Mounds State Park.
“The majority of bridges in Georgia are locally owned. Georgia DOT’s Low Impact Bridge Program and Local Bridge Replacement Program helps local governments replace deficient bridges,” according to a news release from GDOT.
Expect detours for non-local traffic at Flea Hop Road, Colomokee Church Road, and U.S. Highway 27/State Route 1. Drivers will notice detour signs over the coming months.
The bridge, built in 1963, has been deemed “deficient” by the state and is posted for weight limits. GDOT said the construction contract is just under $1.3 million.
