East Dothan residents optimistic about growth in the near future

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — The west side of Dothan is currently in progress of expanding with numerous projects taking place in the area such as a new apartment complex, retail stores, and more restaurants.

But what about the east side of town? Many are curious as to why there has been little to no work is done.

One motive for west Dothan’s growth could be the steady increase in traffic daily which attracts businesses.

“You know, this section is already the highest traffic count, 40-something-thousand cars a day coming in and out of the city from around flowers hospital down to the circle,” Mayor Saliba said.

The east side of town may not be as busy as the west side but it can get hectic at times throughout the day with Southeast hospital being in the area. As for construction on the east side, there is something in the works taking place behind Winn-Dixie but across Highway 84 is the Dothan Village which has been vacant for years.

One east side resident is satisfied with the area but she would like to see the area improve.

“Actually, I like this side of town pretty much how it is but I wouldn’t mind having more opportunities for shopping instead of having to go all the way to the west side of town because that is difficult when you have to go through town to get it,” Neva Stewart said.

Another resident suggested the idea of a Bass Pro Shops or a Walmart Neighborhood Market. Miss Stewart expressed what she would like to see.

“Apparel, stuff for dogs I have pets so I need to go find stuff for my pets. That’s about it seafood a seafood market,” Stewart added.

East Dothan residents can’t wait to see what 2021 has in store.
