ENTERPRISE, Ala. (WDHN) — The Alabama State Board of Veterans Affairs has selected the location for a new state veterans home.

The Veteran’s Home Committee reviewed 12 site proposals submitted by jurisdictions in the Wiregrass region based on five factors, but ultimately named Enterprise as the best option.

“As you know, Enterprise is a patriotic community that values its veterans and military population,” Enterprise Mayor Bill Cooper said. “We welcome them with open arms and embrace the experience, skills, talents, and knowledge that they possess and bring to our midst.”

Coffee County was identified as having the largest veterans population projections in the study, while other counties show a reduction in the veteran population.

“This is a huge win for our veteran population and their families,” said Turner Townsend, Enterprise City Councilman for District 5. “I’m very confident that the Enterprise and the Coffee County community along with the entire surrounding areas will be ready and willing to step up to the plate to provide these veterans the care that they deserve.”

In addition to the veteran population, Enterprise has a workforce to support the home as well as medical services available to support the needs of the veterans.

“We had the best proposal,” said Bill Baker, vice president of government services, Navigator International LLC. “We had the best spot, and we know the people of this city will make that a special place. It won’t be just another business. It’ll be a special place that we’ll take off for the next 100 years.”

The new veterans home should open by 2023.
