DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — With 444 players from 30 states and five countries, the 73rd annual Press Thornton Future Masters Golf Tournament is one many look forward to every year.

The opportunity for young golfers to compete against one another while also fostering friendships is what makes this tournament stand out.

“The tournament was started for a reason to give young players, back then to give people the opportunity to play against people in their same age group instead of competing against older or even adults,” Future Masters General Chairman, King Thornton said. “When someone comes here and has a good time and they go back home they have other junior golfers there. They are able to say hey this is a great place.”

The tournament began Saturday morning for golfers to go through practice rounds and the real competition begins on Sunday.

While this is an opportunity for not only people in the united states many come out of the country. Golfers from Canada, Puerto Rico, Panama, Australia, Israel, as well as many other states made their way to the Circle City to compete in the prestigious tournament and brought more attention to the city of Dothan.

“It has brought a lot of notoriety and some pride to Dothan,” Thornton said. “Then of course the economic impact of the hotels, restaurants, gas, merchandise, food all that kind of stuff is what really the city benefits from it.”

The tournament will continue through June 25. For a list of events and schedules, you can visit their website.
