Geneva County redistricting commission districts with new census numbers

GENEVA COUNTY, Ala. (WDHN) — Following the 2020 census, county commissioners are responsible for drawing redistricting lines using the new population numbers.

On Tuesday, Scott Farmer with the Southeast Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission brought a proposed redistricting of the four commission districts.

District one which borders Houston County’s fast growing west end has shown the greatest population growth in the last decade. Many folks who work in Dothan commute from their homes in eastern Geneva County communities as Slocomb, Malvern, and Fadette.

Under the proposed map, district one has shrunk geographically. Under state and federal statute,
no district can have a 10 percent size difference over other districts in the county.

Farmer says each county should have its district commission lines finalized by the week of Thanksgiving.
