HOUSTON COUNTY, Ala. (WDHN) — Groups such as Wiregrass Electric, Alabama Power, and the Salvation Army are preparing to assist in relief efforts in south Florida as Hurricane Ian nears.
Power crews with Wiregrass Electric and Alabama Power are on standby as Hurricane Ian approaches the U.S.
“Our crews are on standby tracking the weather and ensuring that there will not be a customer impact for the state of Alabama,” Media Relations with Alabama Power, Michelle Tims said.
Alabama Power adds that they are also ready to assist any of their mutual aid partners if they are needed
They will continue to monitor the storm.
It is estimated that tens of thousands of people on the west coast of Florida could go without power for days.
Officials with Wiregrass Electric say they are thankful that the storm will not likely hit their service area, but they have crews ready to go when called to help their sister cooperatives.
“We are looking at probably a Friday, maybe early Saturday morning departure that will send our guys down to the areas most affected,” Wiregrass Elective COO, Brad Kimbro said.
Kimbro says that 4 or 5 of their sister cooperatives could be impacted by this storm and that some serve more than 200,000 customers in south Florida.
“Where it’s coming in it looks like the Tampa area from the wiregrass area we can be there with our men and equipment in you know 6, 7, or 8 hours,” Kimbro said. “So we’ll wait until that storm hits.”
The Dothan Salvation Army is also preparing to help with Hurricane Ian relief if they are called upon.
“We’re taking it one step at a time,” Dothan Salvation Army Corp Officer, Major Linda Payton said. “One day at a time. Watching to see what is going to be needed.”
The mobile canteen is five tons and can be used to serve meals to people in need
“So we are the first ones on call for Florida,” Major Payton said. “Right now, there are 3 or 4 canteens from further west that will be the first responders.”
The Salvation Army tells WDHN they are receiving a shipment of groceries on Wednesday to load the mobile canteen in case they are called into action.
