HENRY, Co. (WDHN) — On March, 6th the Henry County Longbeards will host its annual banquet.
The event is a large fundraiser with live auctions, silent auctions, raffles, and more. Funds raised help local projects and other organizations
“We have our turkey hunters cares funds that we can occasionally help fund specific projects as well as youth outreach events that encourage kids to get outdoors,” NWTF committee member Adrienne Wilkins said.
Also during the banquet, a scholarship is awarded to a Henry County student.
“Each year we accept scholarship applications from local seniors,” Wilkins said. “They write an essay about what conservation means to them and an experience they’ve had in the outdoors. So our board selects the top essay winner, and they receive a scholarship to further their education.”
Last year, the event was almost canceled due to the pandemic, but Governor Kay Ivey’s Safer at Home order went into effect a day after the event. This year, organizers weren’t sure if they would be able to have the event, but now that it if officially in the works, they are very excited for the event and plan to be cautious.
“We’ll have plenty of hand sanitizer,” Wilkins said. “All of our meals are going to be individually prepared, that way there’s less mingling of germs per say, and we’re doing our part to keep everyone safe and distanced as much as possible.”
