DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Friday saw one elementary school here in the Wiregrass honor the late Martin Luther King Jr.
Students at Highlands Elementary School in Dothan were encouraged to write an essay about Martin Luther King Jr. then read those essays to their class in a school-wide competition.
These essays focus on the legacy of the civil rights activist in total four winners were chosen.
One winner came from the 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, and 6th grade.
The following students were recognized at the assembly:
“We wanted to reward students and encourage students to write with a purpose and what greater purpose than to honor Martin Luther King Jr.,” Principal at Highlands Elementary, Beth Bouchard said.
Teachers say this is also a way to remember the legacy of the civil rights activist every day and not just on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
