DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — The House of Ruth is doing its part in raising awareness for domestic violence victims in the Wiregrass.

In fact, October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and so far there have been 10 lives lost out of the 9 counties the organization serves.

The theme for this year’s kickoff ‘Abuse hides in the dark, let’s turn on the light.”

Executive Director Angela Underwood said this is an everyday issue and we must do our part in helping and showing support for those affected.

“It’s important that if we see signs that we say something because it’s going on more and more and it’s becoming more frequent,” Underwood said. “This year as young as 12 years old and old as 67 have lost their lives so it’s more important this year than it has ever been before.”

The service organization is selling t-shirts and yard signs to support the cause. There will be a candlelight vigil for victims on Thursday night October 28th at Pioneer Park across from the police department.
