DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — On Tuesday, the Dothan commission approved a turf installation project at James Oates Park.
James Oates Park is one of the most used parks in the Wiregrass hosting numerous tournaments which invite 50 or more teams from all over the southeast.
During tournaments, teams usually experience a period of rain which typically delays games due to the field being wet.
Now, City Manager Kevin Cowper said they plan to replace the grass with artificial turf.
“As you may know with the artificial turf if it rains you can then play on those fields almost immediately following so that will keep our tournaments on schedule and keep those games going and hopefully attract more and bigger tournaments,” Cowper said.
Cowper said the project will go out for bid soon and they hope to have the turf down within six to nine months.
