A twindemic might be on the horizon

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Last year, the flu season was milder than in previous years because of precautions in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Now with masks being taken off of and more people getting out and about, health professionals are concerned that the flu this year will spread more easily.

And while COVID-19 numbers are lower than a few months ago, President of the Alabama Hospital Association, Dr. Don Williamson is concerned that a mix of flu cases and COVID cases could cause hospitals to fill up again.

“That could create situations where once again ICU beds are short,” Dr. Williamson said. “This time not just because of COVID, but because of the mixture COVID and Influenza. So yes things are moving in the right direction, we need to continue to move them in the right direction.”

Dr. Williamson says the best way to continue moving in the right direction is to get vaccinated for both COVID-19 and the flu.
