MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WDHN) — If you’re planning on losing a few pounds for your New Years Resolution, the state of Alabama has something to help keep you motivated.
Scale Back Alabama, “the state’s largest weight loss and physical activity challenge,” is offering cash prizes to those who lose at least 10 pounds between January and April this year.
Beginning with a weigh-in week starting on Jan. 20 and ending Jan. 26, Alabama residents will be able to join teams of two to try and lose enough weight for a chance to win up to $1000 per team member in a raffle, with smaller cash prizes being available for other participants.
Here’s how it works: you sign up your team on scalebackalabama.com/join, print out your confirmation page, and bring it to a public weigh-in site. A list of available sites can be found on scalebackalabama.com/sites.
If you and your team member both lose 10 pounds, you enter a raffle with other teams for the grand prize. Three teams will be drawn to win $1000 per team member, another three to win $500 per member, and a final three to win $250 per team member.
If your team member doesn’t make the cut, you can still enter a raffle to win $100. Forty people will be chosen for the individual prize amounts.
The final event and prize drawing are scheduled for April 21.
Alabama established Scale Back Alabama in January 2007 to help reduce obesity rates in the population. Nationally, Alabama ranks sixth for adult obesity with 36.2 percent of adults being obese.
Now in its 14th year, Scale Back Alabama has helped Alabamians shed 1.4 million pounds with 353,434 citizens participating.
