DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — On Tuesday afternoon, police surrounded the 900 block of North Bell Street after an argument over a car battery turned deadly.
“This is a senseless case,” Dothan Police Chief, Will Benny said. “This was over a car battery basically. A car battery was taken and traded in for a new one and Mr. Marsh didn’t want to give up the new car battery to go back with the car that he had borrowed. Absolutely ridiculous.”
When police got to the scene, they found William Roberson Jr. had been shot in the abdomen.
Police then began performing CPR at the scene. When medics arrived, Roberson Jr. was transported to Southeast Health where he was later pronounced dead.
After further investigation, police arrested Tobias Marsh, who they say admitted to the crime.
“And subsequently admitted to shooting Mr. Roberson,” Chief Benny said.
Chief Benny said that Marsh and Roberson Jr. knew of each other and were even friends and that they had been friends for years.
Tobias Marsh is currently in the Houston County Jail facing a capital murder charge because police say he shot Roberson Jr. in front of his infant daughter who was less than ten feet away.
“If you have a child under 14 years of age and you are murdered in front of that child, it makes it a capital case,” Chief Benny said.
Marsh’s criminal history includes an assault charge from January of 2019 that was later dismissed in 2021. Another assault charge was waived to a grand jury in 2018.
This case is still under investigation by the Dothan Police Department. They are still looking to see if the rifle that was used in the shooting was Marsh’s rifle.
