PANSEY, Ala. (WDHN) — Douglas Crawford, a longtime family friend of Thomas H. Dean III, heart dropped into his stomach when he received a call about his friend not making it out alive in a house fire.

“I mean it’ll break down anybody I completely broke down when I found out about it Tom was a good man,” Crawford said.

Thomas’s mother, Sarah Dean, who lives next door was worried about her 64-year-old son after she had gone two days without hearing from him.

“She got real concerned and called 911 and this is what they found and this morning about 2’oclock and they told me the trailer had got completely burnt down,” He said.

When law enforcement arrived on the scene, they found that a circuit breaker was tripped. Alabama Power and the Houston County Road and Bridge Department came out to cut the power and remove the roof of the trailer — which is when they found Mr. Dean’s remains.

“He had some back issues on disability, he couldn’t get around good but he was an outstanding person and would help you any way he could,” Crawford said.

Crawford is returning the favor to Thomas’s mother who is left all alone on a fixed income. He hopes the community can pitch in to get her through a difficult time.

“Maybe just some food items anything that can help her out she didn’t have any type of insurance and of course, she gotta do something with the body,” He said.

The body has been sent to Montgomery for an autopsy and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. As more information becomes available we’ll be sure to provide updates.
