DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — As the Fourth of July weekend draws near, people are packing their cars and getting ready to travel.

But before taking a long trip, car experts say there are a few things you need to do to ensure your vehicle is ready.

“The first thing you want to check for sure is your tires,” Jim Whaley Tires Store Manager, Scott Hall said. “Take a look at your air pressure, make sure what you’ve got in there is the correct amount. Check your washer fluid and all your fluids under your car, make sure they are filled to the proper levels. That would be the main thing. I would check your air pressure, all of your fluids, and make sure your maintenance is up to date.”

Hall says tires are the number one thing to check before you travel.

And with National Tire Safety Awareness Week underway, now is the time to make sure your wheels are safe before heading out on the roadways.

“Air pressure is the number one cause of tire wear. It also affects your fuel economy,” Hall said. “It also effects how your vehicle handles. To start with if you don’t have the correct air pressure in your tire then you are going to have issues with tire wear, you may have pull in one way or another, there’s some other issues that you could have.”

Hall says you should check your air pressure about once a month.

If you see that your tire pressure is low it is recommended to fill them up as quickly as you can to prevent any permanent damage.
