Circle City tourism sees an uptick

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — 60 soccer teams and 600 tennis players from all around will be visiting the Circle City this weekend to participate in local sports tournaments. This has caused an uptick in tourism for Dothan over the last year.

“Primarily on the weekends,” President and CEO of Visit Dothan, Aaron McCreight said, “Our weekend business in the hotels in the city has been tremendous this year. It really starts with our sports and our sports tournaments.”

Another area the city of Dothan has seen an uptick in is beach traffic since the beaches remained open during the pandemic, and Dothan became a beneficiary of that. This comes from more people stopping in Dothan to get food, get gas, or spend the night.

“We are on the way to the beaches and on the way from the beaches of Florida, the Pandhandle specifically, so we got a great bump in that and really promoting Dothan as a place to stop along the way on your trip to or your trip from the beaches,” said McCreight, “So we really started tracking that we are doing, even more, this year and even more going into next year.”

McCreight and his staff are also trying to track their visitors to see what is motivating their visit to the Circle City.

“And really see what they’re doing and what’s motivating their visit and where are headed, also ultimately where they are staying,” said McCreight.
