DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Former mayor, active Dothan City School Board chairman, and friend to the community, Mike Schmitz announced that he has no plans to rerun for chairman in this next term.
For 12 years, now Schmitz has serviced the community in many capacities. Schmitz says it was a difficult discussion to step down from the school board but says it’s time for change.
“Yeah it was actually a difficult decision,” Schmitz said. “I’ve had some people call that are interested in running and hopefully they’ll put their name in the hat and I think they would be great leaders. So it’s time for new leadership.”
Schmitz says that he is excited for the future going forward starting with getting back into business and even bringing a new company to the wiregrass.
“Well I’m excited about the opportunities,” Schmitz said. “First of all I’ve been in business here for 30 years. I look forward to working in the car business again. My son Schmitty and I are about to bring another company to Dothan that hasn’t been here before.”
With many years dedicated to serving the Wiregrass, Schmitz says that it was an honor to serve and he will always loves this community.
“I’ve loved serving,” Schmitz said. “It was the greatest privilege of my life to serve. I really enjoyed it, worked really hard, and hopefully did some good things.”
Schmitz says as of right now he doesn’t plan to run for another elected position but he never says never.
