DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Water tower by day, a beacon of light by night. The city of Dothan added a few upgrades to its tower, the Waterworld water tank in Westgate Park.
Since 1980, this tank has been a landmark in Dothan and now the iconic tower shines with dancing lights.
“We have all these great assets in the city of Dothan,” Dothan Utilities Assistant Director of Water Operations, Angie Akos said. “We have this huge landmark and water tower so why not do something that would make it more enjoyable for the public.”
If you visit the water tower any day of the week, between the hours of 5 pm and midnight, and turn your car radio to 88.1 FM, you can experience a light show right in the comfort of your own car.
The city doesn’t plan to stop with just the water tower, there are plans to expand this show all throughout the park.
“Bringing the lighting from the Waterworld tank, through the entrance road actually into the Waterworld park,” Akos said. “So in the future, we would be able to do choreographed shows from the tank all the way to inside the park.”
In the future, this new light show could be a way for the city to utilize the Waterworld watermark during the off-season, and hopefully, bring more attractions to Dothan.
“Eventually, we may be able to do events and things held at the Waterworld park with this new lighting show and it also can be an attraction and an entertainment venue for the city of Dothan,” Akos said.
The full light show is predicted to be complete in about a year, but the water tank display is up and running for anyone to come by and enjoy.
