Dothan police see a decrease in gun violence

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN)— On Sunday afternoon, the Dothan Police Department responded to two shootings that happened within a matter of minutes of each other but were unrelated.

The first shooting was in the 1100 block of Persimmon Street where a man was shot in the lower leg.

About 15 minutes later, another shooting occurred at the Shell gas station located at the corner of Montana Street and West Main.

Police say an argument led to an exchange of gunfire in which a man was shot in the chest-shoulder area. Dothan Police Department Lieutenant Scott Owens says the department continues working to reduce gun violence within the city.

“Operation Clean Sweep a number of times over the recent months, that definitely has a lot to do with the reduction of crime that I was talking about before,” Owens said. “You don’t see as many guns on the street, and as many shootings as you would see before that. Before that, gun crime had absolutely increased.”

Lieutenant Owens says police have seen less gun violence recently than they did in the past.
