DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Dothan’s largest school system will start school on Monday, which means it is time to start getting kids, backpacks, and school supplies.
One organization decided to help parents and kids who may be in need.
Founder of 2020 Focus Sharee Vickers and event assistant Kiana Rivers at first had two separate events but decided to team up for an even bigger event.
“I was aware of, what Sharee had going on as well, so I contacted her and we just said hey let’s team up and make it a big extravaganza for the kids,” Rivers said.
“Initially it was just to help the kids in the community, who were unable to get backpacks, school supplies, and things like that,” Vickers said. “So with the smaller ones, we’ll give those to head start kids.”
As mother’s they say they saw a need and are trying to fix it.
“I was basically looking at my own kids, and I don’t have a support system with their fathers.”
“Really for the kids like she said that’s without that aren’t able to you know have the parents who be able to purchase for the kids, or even the ones who have but need extra,” said Rivers.
So they are stuffing book bags and getting ready to turn Gussie McMillion Park into a fun day with a purpose.
“So many people started coming in, and it became an extravaganza, it became something big, but we have water slides, we have vendors, we have games, giveaways,” Vickers said.
It’s a way to give a child a great start to a productive school year.
The backpack giveaway will start at two p.m. Saturday afternoon. There’s still time if you’d like to make donations of school supplies and backpacks at 678 east Burdeshaw Street in Dothan.
