Dothan uses grant to provide funds to W.A.S.P.

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — The city of Dothan is expecting a grant from the federal government that will be used for law enforcement purposes.

On Tuesday morning, the city of Dothan decided to enter into an agreement with Dale County to use those funds for the Wiregrass Aviation Support Program (W.A.S.P.).

This program pools resources from the different agencies to perform search and rescue operations, surveillance, prisoner transports, and other functions to the Wiregrass area.

“The city of Dothan is in both Houston and Dale county, and so we work corporately with both of those counties commissions, and with their law enforcement agencies,” Dothan City Manager, Kevin Cowper said. “This finding, as I understand, will be at the airport utilizing aviation for law enforcement purposes.”

Cowper says that this agreement will give both the city of Dothan and Dale County an advantage that will stop crimes in both areas.

“Well, it’s just one more resource that we have for law enforcement,” Cowper said. “Any advantage that we can get to combat criminal activity is good for the community. Crime doesn’t stop at the border of one jurisdiction versus another, so we need that regional approach and this is part of that program.”

Cowper also says this arrangement will not only provide law enforcement needed resources but also can help strengthen the relationship between the two agencies.
