DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Students at one elementary school in the Circle City were recently honored for reading.

Dothan City Schools tells WDHN the sixth-grade class at Highlands Elementary School has been named the 2022 World Champions of Reading after winning the 5th Annual READBowl Global Reading Competition.

For the past five years, the competition has been put on by NFL Super Bowl Champion, Malcolm Mitchell.

“This year there were many obstacles put in the path of teachers and students,” Mitchell said. “But, Highlands Sixth Grade Block 3 and Ms. Jones tackled every one of them. We are so proud of them.”

Ms. Amy Jones’ Block 3 class at the elementary school read more than 76,000 minutes in order to take home the title. The class topped 57,000 other students from five different countries for the honor.

“I am extremely proud of the 6th-grade students at Highlands Elementary,” Jones said. “The first week of ReadBowl, school closed due to quarantine. The team captains motivated their classmates to continue reading and continued to drive them to succeed throughout the remainder of the competition.”

Jones’ class also teamed up with other sixth-graders from Blocks 1 and 2, to read more than 214,000 minutes over the four-week competition.
