ELBA, Ala. (WDHN) — Elba water customers are under a boil water notice in effect for residents who have experienced low pressure due to a downed water pump.

Juliette’s Restaurant has been a popular Elba eatery for more than 30 years. However, this week, Jule Odem and her employees have had difficulty keeping things going with low water pressure.

On Tuesday afternoon, the pump at the water tower by Elba city’s high school and elementary went down, affecting several hundred water customers.

Odem says water is essential for a restaurant, and she’s been getting by.

A new pump has arrived and workers will be installing it. The city has also teamed up with Coffee County’s water authority to help fill the water shortage gap.

Since the pump went down on Tuesday, Elba Mayor, Tom Maddox, says he and city staff are working with Coffee County to prevent this from ever happening again.

“Inter-connect with the county water system for that particular area, we have it interconnected with all other areas of town except for that one,” Mayor Maddox. “So this will be for insurance for the future and we’re not sure how soon we will be able to utilize that, but if we have a problem in the future, we will at least have a solution to the problem.”

Mayor Maddox recommends those experiencing low pressure try and conserve as best they can.
In addition, he recommends those folks try and bathe and do clothes washing and dishwashing late at night, or very early in the morning when there’s less traffic on the system.

“We should have the new pump in and work by Monday of next week,” Mayor Maddox said. “So we should have the problem solved by then, Lord willing.”

City officials are asking water customers to be patient. They feel the new pump and other improvements will be complete and online by next Monday.
