ENTERPRISE, Ala. (WDHN) — An Enterprise suspect dies after being shot by homeowner in burglary attempt, police say.

On Sunday June 13, around 5:30 a.m., the Enterprise Police Department responded to a burglary in progress and shooting at the residence in the 200 Block of Brookshire Drive.

Upon arrival officers discovered a deceased male with a single gun-shot wound at the home. The deceased was fatally shot by the homeowner during the burglary and has been identified as Spencer Hines Layton, age 31, of Enterprise.

Over recent years, Layton has been arrested on several minor charges, authorities told WDHN.

“Around 5:30 am our investigators responded concerning a burglary in progress with a shooting,” Enterprise Police Department Lt. Billy Haglund said. “Once on scene our officers determined a deceased individual who was fatally wounded by a homeowner, our investigators began investigating, they are continuing investigating.”

Residents in this peaceful neighborhood told WDHN, it’s always been a quiet neighborhood.

“It really did come as a surprise to have six police cars and the street cordoned off,” neighbor, Manuel Andil said.

This is an ongoing investigation and no charges have been filed at this time.
