First-time teacher talks experience teaching during COVID-19 pandemic

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — It’s a new world as COVID-19 continues sweeping across the nation.

For the first time, teachers new to the education world it’s foreign to them.

For new Dothan City Schools kindergarten teacher Gene’a Mitchell, it’s an experience she didn’t expect. Going through your first year of teaching to be in the middle of the pandemic isn’t what she pictured.

As COVID cases rise, she told WDHN how she feels safe and trusts the guidelines DCS has put in place.

She is eager for the year ahead.

“I’m super excited though, there are challenges I think we have been well equipped to handle this year,” Mitchell said. “And it being my first year I’ve been a little nervous, but I truly believe that we’re ready for whatever comes and what challenges come.”

She is looking forward to a safe and full school year as she starts this new journey.
