GENEVA COUNTY, Ala. (WDHN) — Sheriff Tony Helms says it’s sad but unfortunate, the holiday season is often the season for thieving.

The sheriff reminds the public to make always sure their vehicle is locked whether at their home or in a parking lot. It takes a thief only seconds to get Christmas gifts or other valuables he may
inside.

In addition, don’t post on social media that you are out of town. A Grinch often monitors sites
to see who may not be home, and that makes it easier for him or her to break into a residence.

If at all possible, the sheriff says to install a camera surveillance system that can often be interlinked with a cell phone. In that way, one is able to monitor activity at your own home without even being in town.

The sheriff says even game cameras to catch pictures of wildlife are an effective
way to monitor who is around your home or property.

Helms says the price of this technology has gone down in recent years, and can usually
be bought for around $40.
