COFFEE CO., Ala. (WDHN)—This week, WDHN has learned that Governor Kay Ivey and her staff will conduct interviews to fill the Coffee County District 3 commission seat.

The seat became vacant after District 3 Commissioner Josh Carnley was sworn-in
as the new district 31 state senator earlier this month.

District 3 includes most of Elba and much of Western Coffee County. Whoever is appointed to the post, he or she would have to run for election in two years during the 2024 election cycle.

Coffee County Commission Chairman, Dean Smith, says the decision to appoint is strictly up to the governor. Neither he nor any local person makes that decision.

Chairman Smith says he has not been given a “timetable” of when the governor will pick a replacement for the vacancy. Smith says he has not been given a timetable for when the governor will pick a replacement for the vacancy.
