HEADLAND, Ala. (WDHN) — Friday night, the Henry County Relay for Life held its twentieth annual event honoring those who have battled cancer.
Relay for Life is an event meant to celebrate survivors and raise money for the America Cancer Society. The event was cancelled last year due to the pandemic, but this year things kicked back into gear.
Co-chair Sarah Shipes told WDHN what this event meant to her and all those impacted by cancer.
“Everybody knows one person affected with cancer, my number one is my mom,” Shipes said. “She passed in December of nineteen, my mom’s caregiver also has cancer. Now, she is a survivor and she’s trying to fight and so, cancer affects everyone and I just wanna thank everyone for all their help.”
Businesses on the square donated ten percent of their sales to the cause. Shipes said last year they raised $7,000.
This year they have already raised $18,000.
