Holiday shopping during the COVID-19 pandemic

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Fall is right around the corner, and that means the holiday season is upon us, which means Christmas carols, holiday lights, and plenty of gifts are on the way.

This year could look a lot like last year with shipping becoming an issue during the Coronavirus pandemic.

According to Eagle Eye Outfitters in Dothan, this holiday shopping season will likely see logistical problems with shipping.

So you might not want to wait around to pick out that perfect gift.

Businesses like Amazon ship upwards of 1.6 million packages per day, according to Landing Cube.

With the Coronavirus, logistics and shipping have taken a toll as businesses find it harder to keep staff.

With businesses having trouble hiring staff, online orders can help fill the gap left by COVID.

“I will say business has picked up online in the past couple of years,” Digital Marketing Specialist for Eagle Eye Outfitters, Emma Gaster said. “Our website opened in 2016 and has been steadily growing since then. We are really excited, even in the future, just how far it continues to grow.”

With orders taking longer to reach their destination, the major carriers such as FedEx and UPS are having trouble keeping up, according to Gaster.

“I believe everyone has seen the issues with shipping with all the major carriers since last holiday season,” Gaster said. “And that, I project, to carry on to this season.”

If you procrastinate and wait till the last minute to get that special gift for that special someone, you may not get it in time.

“So we are encouraging customers to shop early, especially if there is something they really, really like,” said Gaster. “Because there is always the potential that we may not be able to get some of these items back in store for the holiday season. So if they want it, they see it, they need to go ahead and get it cause it may not be able to come back in.”
