Honoring the late Hugh Wheelless

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — In Dothan, several hundred people attended the ‘Celebration of Life’ held Thursday morning for Dothan businessman, visionary developer, and community leader Hugh Wheelless, Junior.

“Everybody knows the legacy of his contribution,” his eldest son, Hugh ‘Trip’ Wheelless III said. “Everybody he met was a friend.”

His most notable legacy, besides his indomitable humor and spirit, was The Highlands, which he envisioned in the 1990’s after donating over 400 acres of family land for the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. But he was more than his many accomplishments.

“Hugh was just a giant,” Barbara Wheelless said. “As good as they come. I’m sure gonna miss him.”

Wheelless recently learned that he had been selected as a laureate to be inducted into the Dothan business Hall of Fame.

His legacy will now be honored posthumously during a ceremony with four other selected laureates on November 4.
