How is recent rain in the Wiregrass impacting your home garden?

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Dothan Regional Airport reports that since the start of June, the Circle City had a foot of rainfall, which is about three inches more than average. With all this rainfall, one local nursery owner wants to help people ensure their home gardens stay looking happy and healthy.

According to J.D. Boone, the owner of Dothan Nurseries Greenhouse and Gifts with this particular wet summer here in the Wiregrass, people really need to be on the lookout for fungus.

He said the fungus is very easy to spot. It can usually be seen as black or brown spots on flowers and the easiest way to treat the problem is to let the flowers dry out.

Boone said for plants and shrubs in pots, make sure the pots have a hole in the bottom, so so extra rainwater can drain.

“Humid air, the moist air, especially when you have a plant when the leaves are bunched together its growing well because it is a thick pretty plant from all the rain we have been having but all those leaves kind of touching together and the moisture staying in between us, that causes the fungus problem,” Boone said.

Boone tells WDHN if you need help or tips for your home garden, stop by Dothan Nurseries or send pictures to the nursery’s social media page. He said they are always willing to help keep plants happy and healthy.
