DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — According to Triple-A, more than 47-million Americans took a fourth of July get-a-way, this is why they predict an increase of travelers this upcoming three-day holiday weekend.

Dothan Police Captain, Rachel David said as the unofficial end of summer approaches us, she wants to remind residents of the wiregrass of a few considerations before they hit the road.

“We know it’s a very exciting time when you have a long weekend that is often time a time for celebration, certainly we would encourage people to enjoy this weekend safely and securely,” David said.

According to David, drivers need to pay extra attention to the roadways. She said drivers need to give themselves even more time this weekend to get from place to place.

“Expect that the roadways are going to be busy and for those who are staying in town, expect our local roadways to have more traffic,” David said.

Secondly, David said it’s important everyone keeps their home safe if they going on vacation. She said suspicious people will do suspicious things if given the appropriate tools.

Captain David encourages everyone to go out and have a good time during the holiday weekend but she encourages everyone to keep safety as their top priority.

Last but not least, drinking and driving, David said these two things never mix well. She said the Dothan Police Department along with other Wiregrass agencies will have a close eye on all drivers.

“Adding alcohol to any driving situation via vehicle boats, sporting events, anything like that can introduce a danger that would make it a tragic unnecessary weekend,” David said.
