DALE COUNTY, Ala. (WDHN) — WDHN can now confirm that Dale County Sheriff Wally Olson will not seek reelection.

Sheriff Olson stated in a news conference that he will be retiring at the end of his term in order to be with his family more.

Sheriff Olson began his career with the Dale County Sheriff’s Office in 1995 serving as a dispatcher and correctional officer. Sheriff Olson was elected Sheriff of Dale County in 2007.

Sheriff Olson was awarded the Veterans of Foreign Wars State and National Law Enforcement Officer of the Year award as well as the Victims of Crime and Leniency (V.O.C.A.L.) State Law Enforcement of the Year in 2013 for his leadership and dedication during the 2013 Midland City Hostage Rescue.  

Reports say Chief Deputy Mason Bynum is likely to announce his run for the position in the near future.
